Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

J held another two-day intensive digital photography class at Leesville High School this week Monday and Wednesday. Students were very enthusiastic and they were very much involved in the class. J was blessed to have so many nice students. Questions came up are the followings: how to take night scene pictures, how to take sports pictures, how to take kids pictures, and what the most important features of digital photography.

Students learned two basic things on their first day – ISO settings and White balances. They learned two more additional important things on their second day – Shutter speeds and apertures. J explained the effects of shutter speeds, differences among aperture values, types of lenses, types of cameras, and types of hot-shoe flashes.

J plans to open three-day intensive course Fall 2010. Students were asked for longer classes and hands-on classes; therefore, he plans to offer three-day photography course this year and then four-day photography course next year (Spring 2011).

Snow in Raleigh – how to take pictures in snow

Monday, February 1st, 2010

We had snow on Friday night and Saturday in Raleigh NC. J went out to take pictures of his family playing in snow. He took pictures of a snowman, too. What will be the easiest way to take pictures of subjects in snow? If one’s camera has a snow shooting mode, he can use the setting. If one is using an average metering mode for an exposure, he needs to overexpose his camera. Why? If one goes outside in snow, his eyes are hurt because it is too bright (think about all the reflections from snow). The CPU in camera thinks that the scene is too bright. Therefor, the camera wants to allow only a little light, which will make one’s main human subject darker or under-exposed. His background, snow, looks fine. However, one wants his friends or family members to come out properly exposed. That is why one needs to overexpose for his main subjects in snow.

Dragging a camera shutter speed at low ambient light

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

Using a hot shoe flash in a low ambient light condition, one may have images with very dark backgrounds. Just like that, one may have extremely dark or black background at night scene photographs. Camera flashes have the limitation of distance how far they can reach. The power of flashes is specified by a number (Guide numbers).

More light reaches the sensors or films with a longer exposure, which will make lighter backgrounds. One needs to drag his camera shutter speed to make lighter background. A sync shutter speeds of cameras can be 1/125, 1/200, or 1/250 depending on the camera manufacturers. Slower than the sync shutter speeds are dragging shutters. For example, shutter speeds of 1/30 or 1/60 will light up the dark background or night scene.

Photography tips for an overexposed background

Outdoor pictures can be easily overexposed. If a picture was taken under a shade, your auto-set digital camera can determine a right exposure for your subject (a person) at the scene.

However, the background in the sun may be overexposed or washed-out. Because the image was taken and optimized with an exposure under the shade, sunny background may be overexposed. When the exposure was set for a sunny side, your subject in the shade would be underexposed. The strong contrast between shade and sunny areas cannot be avoided. A flashlight should be used in this scenario. After you determine the background exposure, you force to fire your flashlight. This is a way to reduce the light-intensity contrast between shade and sunny side.
